Legacy Chapter President’s Notes

Legacy Chapter President’s Notes

The season has begun and April has already been a busy month. With the return of the aircraft from the Naval Test Pilot School (NTPS), Ride Saturday, and the Augusta and Denton events we have hit the road running.  Please volunteer as you can.  We have some events that we find ourselves short of volunteers.  I encourage you to look at these and help where you can.

Completed events:

30 Mar – 11 Apr – Naval Test Pilot School

12 Apr – Ride Saturday – we flew 11 UH-1 passengers, 1 AH-1 and sold $624 in merchandise.

26-27 Apr – Augusta Airshow -  This was a highly successful event.  We flew 408 UH-1 passengers, 22 Ah-1 passengers and sold $1,465 in merchandise.

26-27 Apr – Military Show Denton, N.C. – This was another great event.  We flew 320 UH-1 passengers, 16 AH-1 passengers and had $2,711 in merchandise sales.

Please see the following article written after one of our recent Ride Saturdays:

Maintenance:

Aircraft Status

AH-1 283 – in phase – come help work on the aircraft and learn about it.

  AH-1 826 – up

  AH-1 998 – up

  UH-1 354 – up

  UH-1 426 – up

  UH-1 624 – engine installation in progress

Bird Dog – annual inspection due

The week of 13th-17th and 20-24th will be heavy maintenance weeks to get 283 through phase.  Day shifts and augmented evening shifts will be running.  June will have some of the same, dates to be determined later, but we will most likely have a Huey phase.

Sweat Equity:

To record sweat equity go to SETS.

Hangar:

The Thursday and Friday prior to our Ride Saturdays are available workdays.  Come to the hangar early; this is a great opportunity to get some sweat equity.  You can work on the aircraft, the hangar and/or help prepare for the event.

Safety:

I want to reiterate ladder safety.  When using the ladder to inspect the main rotor blades there should be one person holding the blade tie down, one holding the ladder and one inspecting the blade.  Anytime a ladder is being used there should be someone holding it steady.

Pilot’s and Crew Chiefs:

Training happens throughout the year, not just at annual training.  To be eligible for in flight training, during annual training, you must have participated and /or had sweat equity the prior year.  If you did not receive in flight training during this time, we will make every effort to complete the training during an event in which you participate.

Administrative Notes

Communication one of the keys to success in anything we do.  Because each event is different and has its own issues it is important that information flows freely.  Show schedules should be passed to the pilots with times when we cannot fly annotated.  Although we try to stick to the airshow schedule, they are, and we must stay flexible.  Just because we did it that way yesterday does not necessarily mean it will be the same today.  Anytime you leave, especially when assigned to a position, let the show boss know so he can determine if you need to be replaced.  Just because we are not able to fly because a performer is in the air doesn’t mean it’s time to visit the event.  There is normally still work to be done so coordinate with the show boss if you wish to leave.  If you have questions or are unsure of what is planned or expected of you, don’t be afraid to ask.  If you find yourself standing around with nothing to do ask for a job or look around and see if there is something you can do to keep things moving.

Truck and trailer training:

We are still looking for someone to help Michael Ward with the truck and trailer training.  If interested please contact him.

If you are interested in driving the truck and trailer throughout the year to the different events contact him as well.  We have a shortage of drivers and need your help in supporting this effort.

Congratulations to Scott Coile and Fred Edwards for completing the truck and trailer training. We wish them safe and uneventful travels.  Thank you for stepping up.

What’s on Your Mind?

Your opinion and ideas matter.  If you have an idea or suggestion on how to make the chapter/foundation better I’d like to hear it.  We are looking for solutions so any suggestion is welcome.  Let us know at legacy.operations@armyav.org.

Thank you for your support and I hope to see you throughout the year.
